Apples: Warmer Climates in the South

The following is a list of apple trees that grow well in the warmest areas of the South. Some of these apples also do very well in the rest of the United States, but the varieties below are known to tolerate the heat and humidity that one can expect in the South (particularly in climate zone 8 and portions of 9 (see USDA Climate Zone)....... in areas of southern North Carolina,  and most areas of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Missisippi, Louisiana, and Texas.

 In order of ripening:

June/July:

Yellow June/Yellow Transparent (for sauce and pies- tart)

Bevan's Favorite (fresh eating- firm and sweet)

Aunt Rachel (cooking and eating- firm and tart)

July/August:

Mary Reid (cooking, drying, and eating- firm and tart)

Hunge (cooking, cider, and eating- firm and tart)

Horse (cooking, drying, cider, and eating- firm and tart)

August/September:

Summer Banana (fresh eating and cooking- sweet and firm)

Roxbury Russet (cooking, eating and cider- somewhat firm and sweet/tart)

Mollies Delicious (eating and cider- firm and sweet)

September/October:

Kinnaird's Choice (eating and cider- firm and mildly sweet)

Virginia Winesap (eating and cider- tart/sweet and firm)

 Blacktwig (eating, cooking, drying, and cider- tart/sweet and firm)

October/November:

Va. Gold (eating and great keeper, cooking too- firm and acidic-tart)
